Music & Theater

Music is presented in a variety of forms. Guitar, drums, percussion, vocals, keyboarding, and xylophone are all part of the repertoire of music presented. Students learn the language of music thorugh sound and vocabulary. Talented musicians from the music industry share their knowledge and skills with students throughout the District.

Guitar- is presented in group sessions where every student works with a guitar. They learn to use a pick as well as to play chords. Students learn that there are many types of guitars and learn how to distinguish the difference of the distinct sounds of the instruments.

Drumming- incorporates a range of drumming experiences that are inclusive of percussion, drum rhythms as well the playing of a full set of drums. The Percussion Team presents students with such instruments as the djembe, tubano, congas, marimbas, and shekeres. Students learn specialized rhythms and experience the creative license to develop their own specific sound.

Choir Singing- is the ses- sion where students learn that their voice is an instrument. They learn to blend their voices and to harmonize. Students become confident in the use of their voices and are often surprised by the result of the inflection in their voices can bring.

Keyboarding-teams are always met with excitement and enthusiasm. Several keyboards are brought to each school site and students immediately explore producing a multitude of sounds. Students learn keyboarding, scales, chords and how to assemble notes together to create melodies and songs.
